Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Political campaign promises are a common feature of electoral campaigns, serving as a key tool for gaining voter support. However, the implementation of these promises is often inconsistent, leading to public disillusionment and reduced trust in the political process. In Gombe Local Government, Gombe State, political campaign promises have been a focal point of elections, but there is often a gap between promises made by candidates and their actual delivery in office. This study will examine the relationship between political campaign promises and their subsequent implementation in Gombe.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Many political candidates in Gombe make ambitious promises to voters during elections, but there are frequent instances where these promises are not fulfilled. This gap between promise and delivery raises concerns about the accountability of elected officials and their commitment to serving the public. This study seeks to investigate the reasons behind this disconnect and its implications for governance in Gombe.

  1. To assess the nature of political campaign promises made by candidates in Gombe Local Government.
  2. To evaluate the extent to which political campaign promises are implemented after elections.
  3. To propose strategies for improving the implementation of political campaign promises in future elections.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What are the common political campaign promises made by candidates in Gombe Local Government?
  2. To what extent are these promises fulfilled after candidates assume office?
  3. What factors contribute to the failure to implement political campaign promises in Gombe?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Political campaign promises in Gombe Local Government are often not implemented due to challenges related to resources, political opposition, and administrative inefficiencies.
  2. The failure to fulfill campaign promises negatively affects public trust and political participation in Gombe.
  3. Improved transparency and accountability mechanisms can enhance the implementation of political campaign promises.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings will provide valuable insights into the gap between political promises and their implementation, highlighting the importance of accountability in governance. It will offer recommendations for improving the relationship between political leaders and the electorate in Gombe.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on political campaign promises made during local government elections in Gombe. Limitations include potential biases in the information provided by political actors and challenges in evaluating the full scope of promise implementation.
